Not every trial comes by open conflict. Some come by darkness, confusion, and the slow grind of fear that whispers when you can’t see what’s ahead.

The Valley of the Shadow of Death

Christian walks through a valley that is dim, dangerous, and filled with hazards: deep ditches, snares, and frightening voices that seem to follow him through the dark. At times the air feels thick with despair. He hears suggestions that he should give up, or that the journey is pointless, or that he is alone.

But Bunyan is careful here: Christian is not saved by his own toughness. He is preserved by God’s promises, and he presses on because he believes that his Shepherd is near, even when he cannot feel it clearly.

There are seasons in the Christian life when the path feels like this, when the light seems far away and the heart feels fragile. In those moments, the comfort is not found in pretending the darkness is small, but in remembering that God’s presence is greater.

Psalm 23:4 (KJV)

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

God’s presence is the believer’s comfort in the darkest hour.
