Not every danger on the pilgrim road looks frightening. Some dangers sound impressive, spiritual, and full of good words.
Talkative
Christian and Faithful meet Talkative, a man who loves religious conversation. He is eager to discuss doctrine, morality, and Christian language, but he is unwilling to live what he says. He can speak loudly about truth while quietly refusing obedience.
Faithful, with wisdom and firmness, exposes the hypocrisy. He makes it plain that true grace does not stay in the mouth it reaches the heart, changes the life, and produces fruit. Talkative does not respond with repentance, but with offence. He leaves angry because he will not be corrected.
It’s a sobering scene, because it reminds us that religious talk can be a substitute for real surrender if we are not careful.
James 1:22 (KJV)
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
Empty words without obedience reveal a false profession.
