Not every temptation looks sinful at first glance. Sometimes it looks like opportunity or a quick detour that promises gain with very little cost.
The Hill Lucre
The pilgrims meet Demas, who tempts them to turn aside to a silver mine on Lucre Hill. It is presented as something harmless, something sensible: why not take a little wealth for the journey? Why not make life easier?
But Christian sees the danger. He warns Hopeful, reminding him that the lure of riches has ruined many, and that looking back has destroyed the hearts of those who once seemed well. They resist, and they continue forward, choosing the narrow way over the glittering pit.
